Veteran Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko has said that becoming the Oloja of Lagos-elect is a serious call to duty that comes with a lot of cultural and community duties.
Last week, the King Kosoko Royal Family named the actor the new Oloja-elect of Lagos.
The Royal Family brought the 72-year-old to the palace of the Elereko of Lagos last Saturday. This ended an eight-year impasse in finding a new Oloja to fill the position that was left open after Chief Adebola Ige died in 2017.
The Olori Ebi General of the King Kosoko Royal Family, Mrs. Mutiat Ali-Balogun, made the announcement and introduced Jide Kosoko to the people. She did the traditional procedures and prayers to cement the appointment with Deputy Olori Ebi General Oyindamola Ayepola.
Kosoko said Wednesday that he was excited about the selection and that it seemed right, like a “call to service” with great obligations. The next Oloja-elect of Lagos, on the other hand, has not yet said how this traditional job will effect his long career in movies.
Bolaji Amusan, a Nollywood actor known as Mr. Latin, thought the appointment was a sign of the character of people in the Nigerian film business.
“Jide is not the only prince in Lagos or in the Kosoko family, but he was chosen as Oloja of Lagos because he is smart and well-respected in the community,” Amusan stated.
Kosoko’s new path is part of a bigger trend of celebrities getting involved in traditional politics. He comes after comedian Okey Bakassi, who was made king in Imo State last year. For Kosoko, the role is a step toward cultural and community obligation.
