The Grammys are sure to have great performances, in-your-face fashion, and maybe even some music history.
Here are five things to keep an eye on in Los Angeles tomorrow:
– Winner of the New Album of the Year –
The Album of the Year Grammy is perhaps the most wanted one. This year’s winner might make history in a number of ways.
Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny, Sabrina Carpenter, R&B artist Leon Thomas, Tyler the Creator, hip-hop duo Clipse (Pusha T and Malice), and pop superstar Justin Bieber are all competing for the award. None of them have ever won in this category before.
If Lamar’s “GNX” wins, he will be the first male solo rapper to win the category. Lauryn Hill and the duo OutKast are the only rappers who have come before him.
It will be the first time a Spanish-language album wins the top prize if Bad Bunny wins for “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos.”
– Song of the Year: a war between languages –
Three of the eight contenders for Song of the Year, which is another important honor, are not completely in English. This is a big change.
The lyrics of “Golden,” the super popular song from the Netflix animated movie “KPop Demon Hunters,” and “APT,” a song by Blackpink singer Rose and Bruno Mars, are in English and Korean.
If either of them wins a Grammy, it will be the first time a bilingual song has won for songwriting.
If Bad Bunny wins with “DTMF,” a song with Caribbean influences, it will be the first time a Spanish-language song has won.
– For host Noah, the sixth time is the charm –
Trevor Noah, a South African comedian, will host the Grammys for the sixth time. Organizers claim this will be his last time.
Noah, who is 41 years old, hosted music’s biggest night for the first time in 2021, when the event was reduced down because of the coronavirus outbreak.
The biracial comedian has done a combination of political satire and lighthearted entertainment talk, and most of the time, people have liked what he’s done.
Ben Winston, the executive producer of the show, told The Hollywood Reporter, “His impact on the show has been truly spectacular, and we can’t wait to do it together one last time.”
– Bieber comes on stage –
Justin Bieber is one of the artists that will definitely play at Crypto.com Arena. He is up for four categories, including Album of the Year for “Swag,” his first studio album in four years, which he released as a surprise in July.
The 31-year-old pop artist has been fighting Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that partially paralyzed his face and had him cancel the last leg of a world tour last year.
Bieber, who became famous as a kid in 2009, is set to headline the Coachella event in the California desert this April.
According to the organizers, Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, and Clipse are also set to perform.
– New groups –
Every year, the Recording Academy gives out a lot of honors. This year, they added two more and took one away, bringing the total to 95.
Some people in Nashville thought that the more current pop-country sound was drowning out artists with a more traditional country feel, so they established a new category for Best Traditional Country Album.
The old name for the best country album is now Best Contemporary Country Album.
The other new category is Best Cover Art.
The academy notes, “These new categories show the Recording Academy’s commitment to honoring a wider range of artistic craft and the new ways music is made and enjoyed.”
Best Recording Package is the new name for two current categories: best boxed or special limited edition package and best recording package.
