The Global Firepower Index rates the military strength of more than 140 countries based on their people and weapons. It also shows how countries are placing themselves on the world arena.
The 2026 rankings showed the growth, progress, and balance of power in different regions. African powerhouses are investing in technology and training to keep the peace and security.
According to their global rankings, these are the best African armed forces:
1. Egypt (ranked 19th in the world)
Egypt has been the strongest military power in Africa and one of the strongest in the world. They have established a strong air force, a well-trained army, and a growing naval zone.
2. Algeria (27th in the world)
Algeria is number two in Africa because it has a big defense budget and solid relationships with military suppliers throughout the world. The country’s advanced air fleet and well-equipped ground forces make sure that all of its land is ready.
3. Nigeria (33rd in the world)
The Nigerian military has gotten stronger by modernizing and making its own weapons. The country’s military spending is for fighting terrorism in its own states.
4. South Africa (Ranked 40th in the world)
South Africa has a competent army and superior technologies, as well as a robust defense industry at home. It is a major security player in Southern Africa because of its air force and navy.
5. Ethiopia (47th in the world)
