Yesterday in Abuja, there was tension when a number of unhappy workers from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) reportedly chased the motorcade of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, during a protest over alleged unresolved salary and welfare concerns.
In a video that our reporter saw, the workers, who were on strike, were seen assembling to make their requests. They then became visibly upset as Wike’s convoy went through the area, according to Daily Trust.
The demonstrators were heard chanting and going toward the cars while asking for attention to their problems.
The FCTA workers went on strike last week and said they would not stop until their “long-standing labor and welfare demands” were met.
The walkout has stopped work in most of Abuja’s key government agencies.
After that, Wike sued the Joint Unions Action Committee (JUAC) in court over the strike.
The National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) in Abuja received the case NICN/ABJ/17/2026, which is set to be heard today.
The FCT minister and the FCTA are the claimants in the lawsuit, while the president of JUAC, Rifkatu Iortyer, and the secretary-general of the union, Abdullahi Saleh, are the defendants. They are being sued in their official positions.
