“We might be able to sell humanoid robots to the general public by the end of next year,” stated Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla. Additionally, he forecast that by the end of this year, “an artificial intelligence (AI) smarter than humans will emerge, and in five years, an AI smarter than all of humanity.”
Musk had a conversation with Larry Fink, the chairman of BlackRock and interim co-chair of the World Economic Forum (WEF/Davos Forum), on the 22nd local time. He continuously made upbeat predictions about AI technology and humanoid robots during the conversation.
According to Musk, Tesla’s “Optimus” humanoid robot is already being used in factories for basic duties, and he is optimistic that it will “perform more complex tasks by the end of this year.” “Once we are highly confident in its extremely high reliability, safety, and functional range,” he continued, sales to the general public would start. “Robotics and AI are the path to abundance for everyone,” he underlined, adding that this technology is the only way to end world poverty. Additionally, he put forth the prediction that “robots will outnumber humans.”
By the end of this year, he predicts the emergence of an AI that is more intelligent than humans. “By the end of this year, and at the latest, by next year, an AI model smarter than any human will appear,” Musk stated. “Probably by 2030 or 2031, that is, five years from now, AI will become smarter than all of humanity,” he continued.
He noted that electricity supply is the largest barrier to such technical advancement. Musk said, “The U.S. may soon lack the capacity to power the chips it produces,” emphasizing the need to fortify renewable energy infrastructure, such as solar power.
“Autonomous vehicles will soon become mainstream,” he added. “We expect supervised FSD approval in Europe next month, and a similar timeline may apply to China,” Musk stated in reference to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, which is being developed with the intention of autonomous driving. He added that in Austin, Texas, where the business has its headquarters, Tesla has started testing robo (driverless) taxis “without a safety monitor.”
