The impeachment of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy Ngozi Odu has hit another snag: two additional members of the State House of Assembly have pulled their support for the process.
Channels TV says they asked for a peaceful end to the state’s political problems.
Barile Nwakoh, who represents Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi, who represents Obio/Akpor Constituency II, made their decisions known just 48 hours after two other MPs did the same.
The lawmakers claimed they changed their minds after respected leaders and stakeholders asked them to show moderation for the sake of peace and stability in the State. They still believed that the governor and his deputy may have broken constitutional rules.
Four of the 26 legislators who first supported the notice of alleged gross misbehavior have now backed away from the impeachment effort. This shows that more and more people in the Assembly are calling for dialogue instead of confrontation.
The Rivers State House of Assembly is set to meet again on January 15, 2026. People are now wondering how the House’s leaders would deal with the growing divides.
At a news conference in Port Harcourt, Sylvanus Nwankwo, the Minority Leader of the House and representative of Omuma Constituency, and Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency said they were no longer going to be a part of the impeachment process.
The MPs told their colleagues to look into other ways to break the political deadlock, saying that if the tension lasted too long, it may make the state’s government even less stable.
