Today, the United States announced the suspension of immigrant visa processing for Nigeria and 74 other nations, marking President Donald Trump’s latest action against foreign nationals seeking entry into America.
The United States has historically denied visas to individuals deemed likely to require government assistance; but, the State Department has announced it will now exercise the same ability to implement a comprehensive suspension of immigrant visas based on nationality, according to AFP.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated, “The Trump administration is terminating the exploitation of America’s immigration system by individuals seeking to extract wealth from the American populace.”
“Processing of immigrant visas from these 75 countries will be suspended as the State Department reevaluates immigration procedures to avert the admission of foreign nationals likely to utilize welfare and public benefits,” he stated.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on X that the impacted nations would encompass Somalia — which has been the subject of Trump’s vehement criticism following the involvement of immigrants in a fundraising controversy in Minnesota — along with Russia and Iran.
Leavitt referenced a Fox News item indicating that more affected nations would comprise some countries with amicable relations with the United States, including Brazil, Egypt, and Thailand.
The State Department did not promptly disclose a comprehensive list of countries.
Trump has openly expressed his intention to diminish immigration from individuals not of European ancestry. He characterized Somalis as “garbage” who ought to “return to their origins” and expressed a preference for Scandinavians relocating to the United States.
The State Department announced on Monday that it has rescinded over 100,000 visas since Trump’s reinstatement, setting a one-year record.
Last month, the Department of Homeland Security reported that the Trump administration deported over 605,000 individuals, while an additional 2.5 million departed voluntarily.
The recent action does not impact tourists, business, or other visas, including those for soccer enthusiasts intending to attend this year’s World Cup, but the Trump administration has pledged to scrutinize all applicants’ social media histories.
