A 40-year-old man with a long criminal record has been charged with first-degree murder after a Nigerian man was shot and killed aboard a GO bus at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto. This is the first murder in the city in 2026.
On their website, the Toronto Police claimed that police were summoned to the terminal, which is close to Yorkdale Road and Allen Road, around 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, after reports of a shooting.
According to investigators, the suspect and the victim both got on a GO bus at the terminal. The suspect then shot the victim and ran away on foot.
The statement says that authorities found a guy with a gunshot wound when they got there, but even though they tried to save his life, the Nigerian was declared dead at the site.
The Toronto police later revealed that the victim was Osemwengie Irorere, a 46-year-old man from Nigeria.
Reports from the local media indicated that an eyewitness who was sitting right behind the victim said the bus was dark and full of people waiting to leave when they heard a single gunshot.
“I thought it was a flat tire or something, but right after that, a guy in front of me got up, put his hands in his pockets, and ran off the bus,” the witness claimed, asking to remain anonymous for safety reasons.
He said, “Right after, I stood up and looked at the seat in front of me and saw a guy who was bleeding.” He also said that immediately the shot was fired, he could smell smoke in the air.
Police claimed they found the guy and apprehended him not long after near the Yorkdale subway station. They also found a gun.
Tyrel Gibson, 40, from Toronto, is the person who is being accused.
On Monday, January 5, he went to the Toronto Regional Bail Center.
Court papers say that Gibson has a long criminal record that goes back to 2000 and includes about two dozen charges.
He has been found guilty of crimes in the past, such as attempted murder and crimes involving guns. He admitted to aggravated assault, using a gun, having a gun with ammo, and having a gun without a license in 2015. He was banned from owning guns for life.
In 2017, he was given an eight-year prison sentence, but it’s not known how much of the time he actually spent in prison.
