The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has said that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is sending the Super Eagles players and officials’ allowances for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) to different banks.
According to The Guardian, Nigerian journalist Tobi Adepoju, who goes by the name “Oganla Media,” said this on Wednesday in an update after the Super Eagles threatened to skip their AFCON 2025 quarterfinal match against Algeria because they hadn’t been given their allowances.
“UPDATE FROM MOROCCO: I just talked to a high-ranking NFF official about the possible strike by players and officials,” Adepoju wrote on his official X account.
He went on to say that the NFF official responded, “The money has been sent from the CBN to each bank.” When the process is done, the players and officials will get all of their incentives.
Oluwashina Okeleji, another Nigerian journalist, said on his official X account earlier today that the Super Eagles had threatened to not play their AFCON 2025 quarterfinal match against Algeria because they hadn’t been given their allowances.
“Players and coaches from Nigeria are waiting for their AFCON 2025 bonuses. Okeleji noted, “Win bonuses for four matches against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Mozambique have not yet been received.”
“The team is still focused, but the players will NOT practice or travel to Marrakech on Thursday if this isn’t fixed.
Nigeria has won the AFCON three times, but they have a funny way of sabotaging themselves.
Before the AFCON 2025 event, officials promised the players and coaches their allowances will be paid on time.
“After going undefeated to reach the quarterfinals against Algeria, the team will NOT train or travel on Thursday.”
The Super Eagles won all of their group stage games, beating Tanzania 2-1, Tunisia 3-2, and Uganda 3-1. They then beat Mozambique 4-0 in the round of 16 on Monday.
On Saturday, January 10, 2026, the Eric Chelle-led team will play Algeria in the quarter-finals of the championship in Marrakech. The winner will move on to the semi-finals.
