Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has no authority to meddle in the APC’s activities in Rivers State, according to Senator Ajibola Basiru, National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Basiru, the former governor lacked the “locus to dabble into the affairs” of the ruling party because he was not an APC member.
In response to Wike’s caution to avoid becoming involved in Rivers State politics, the national secretary posted this on the APC’s official X handle.
“Just to be clear, according to our records, Minister Nyesom Wike is not a member of our Party (APC), so he has no right to interfere in [our party’s] internal affairs,” he said.
The former congressman claimed that it was his duty as the APC’s National Secretary to safeguard the party’s interests as well as those of all of its members and institutions.
Therefore, my remarks about the APC’s activities in Rivers State cannot be interpreted as an excessive meddling in the state’s internal affairs. My activities as National Secretary cannot be limited to Osun State, where I am from,” he continued.
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has requested that Senator Ajibola Basiru, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), not getting involved in politics in Rivers State.
Rivers should be left alone.
During his thank-you visit to the state’s Oyigbo Local Government Area, the FCT minister had instructed Bashiru to keep Rivers alone after the party chieftain on Sunday warned Victor Giadom, the party’s National Vice Chairman, South-South, to stop disparaging the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, in order to appease Wike.
Basiru’s remarks came after Giadom dubbed Fubara a “so-called governor” during Wike’s visit to the Gokana Local Government Area on December 30, 2025.
Additionally, the national vice chairman had stated that Fubara needed to go via Wike in order to win anything in Rivers.
Wike, however, took Basiru’s remarks seriously and requested Giadom to counsel the APC scribe to stay away from Rivers politics for his own sake.
“Tell your national secretary to stop bothering Rivers.” Don’t take our support for Mr. President for granted; go ask those who have tried it before.
Wike advised him to exercise caution when making statements.
The former governor of Rivers added that he will alert President Bola Tinubu on Bashiru’s remark.
“I shall instruct them to inform Mr. President when I visit the Minister of Blue Economy upon his return. He said, “Take your hand off Rivers State. If it burns, don’t say na me burn am.”
He also advised anyone interfering with Rivers politics due to the purported ₦600 billion in the state treasury to stay out of the state.
He clarified that no one helped the Rivers people in 2023 when they were fighting to support President Bola Tinubu.
The APC journalist and his associates should stay out of politics, he insisted, or else “anything you see you, take.”
“Take the one you have taken and stop making unnecessary comments,” the minister continued, referring to Rivers as “a no-go area.”
We have made the decision to stand by Mr. President, and we are doing just that. No one coerced us into endorsing Tinubu in 2023.
“Now that the food is ready and everyone is arriving, no one was talking when it was hot.” Don’t bother Rivers State.
