Wolverhampton Wanderers won their first Premier League game of the season today at a cold Molineux Stadium, beating West Ham United 3-0.
West Ham’s chances of staying in the league took another hit as Wolves scored three goals in the first 41 minutes, giving them an unassailable advantage over Nuno Espírito Santo’s team.
The Hammers’ 20th game of the season got off to a terrible start.
Wolves went ahead in the fourth minute when Soungoutou Magassa made a mistake in the middle of the field that let Mané pass to Hwang, who crossed low for Arias to score from eight yards out. West Ham made a brief effort, but they didn’t challenge Wolves goalkeeper José Sá for the rest of the game.
In the 31st minute, Wolves extended their lead when Maximilian Kilman couldn’t clear his penalty area. Magassa fouled Mané, and Hwang calmly took the penalty kick, sliding the ball down the middle beyond Alphonse Areola.
In the 41st minute, Mané scored the last goal by getting the ball in space, running against Dinos Mavropanos, and shooting a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner.
After the break, Wolves were in control of the game, and West Ham’s greatest chance came from Jarrod Bowen’s errant overhead kick, which meant the visitors didn’t have a single attempt on target. Wolves almost made their lead bigger when Hugo Bueno caused Areola to make a diving save, replacement Jørgen Strand Larsen just missed a header, and Mané challenged the goalkeeper again with a clever turn.
The result ended West Ham’s nine-game losing streak in the league.
On Tuesday, they will play Nottingham Forest, who is fourth from the bottom. This game is very important for their chances of staying in the league.
