According to Channels TV, the incident happened aboard a Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) bus that was transporting them from a colleague’s wedding in the State’s Kaltungo Local Government Area.
When the bus’ tire exploded on the way back around Kumo town in the Akko Local Government Area of Gombe after a successful wedding program in Kaltungo, the vehicle lost control and veered off into nearby bushes.
Seven people have died, according to Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Gombe Sector Commander Samson Kaura and Government House Director General, Press and Media Affairs Ismaila Misilli. Four more people have been injured to varying degrees.
While the injured were taken to the hospital and are presently receiving treatment, the bodies have been sent to a morgue in Gombe.
Manu Haruna Kwami, Manager Administration, NTA; Isa Lawan, Film Editor, NTA; Musa Tabra, a retired Manager News; and Zarah Umar, Manager, News and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor in the Office of the First Lady, were among those who perished in the tragic event.
Other people include Judith Kutus, an information officer with the Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB); Aminu Adamu, a senior driver; and Adams Danladi of StarTimes.
Through Misilli, Governor Inuwa Yahaya has since sent condolence messages to the relatives of the deceased and wished for a speedy recovery for those undergoing treatment.
“This tragedy is quite upsetting. We have lost dedicated public servants who served with passion and a strong sense of duty, as well as coworkers and partners in advancement. The governor stated, “Their absence will be felt for a long time.”
“We sincerely pray for the injured’s quick and full recovery, and our thoughts and prayers are with them. He stated, “The Gombe State government is keeping a close eye on the situation and will make sure that all necessary assistance is provided.”
“Gombe State is going through a difficult time. We mourn together, grieve together and we ask Almighty God to keep us all safe from such terrible events,” the governor continued.
