On Christmas Day, the Benue State Police Command saved one Geoffrey Akume and stopped a kidnapping attempt.
DSP Udeme Edet, the Command’s spokeswoman, revealed this in a statement made available to Makurdi reporters yesterday.
According to Edet, the event happened early in the morning in Tiortu, along Gboko/Makurdi Road.
The victim was traveling from Gboko to Makurdi when armed individuals suspected of being kidnappers attacked him at Tiortu, according to the police spokesperson.
She claimed that they had taken the victim by force and were currently escorting him farther into a dense woodland nearby.
“As soon as the Benue State Police Command received the distress report, they moved quickly to start a coordinated search of the region and heavy patrols.
The criminals left the victim and ran into the forest after spotting the police squad and hearing the sirens.
“The victim who fled from the escaping kidnappers was successfully retrieved by the police patrol squad without any injuries and without a ransom being paid.
“After that, he was brought to the Abinse Police Station, where the Benue State Commissioner of Police gave him a debriefing before reuniting him with his family,” she stated.
According to Edet, Mr. Ifeanyi Emenari, the Commissioner of Police, has praised the operation’s participants’ professionalism, bravery, and prompt response.
The good people of Benue were reassured by Emenari of the Command’s steadfast dedication to preserving life and property, particularly during the holiday season.
He also reassured citizens that intelligence-led policing, patrols, and stop-and-search activities have been stepped up in key areas of the state.
The public is urged to exercise caution and to report any suspicious activity or movements to the closest police station or via authorized emergency channels as soon as possible.
“We’re still working to find and apprehend the escaping suspects,” she stated.
