To commemorate Christmas, Boxing Day, and the New Year, the federal government announced today, Monday, that December 25, December 26, and January 1, 2026, will be public holidays.
Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, made the declaration in a statement in Abuja on behalf of Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Greetings of the warm season were sent by Tunji-Ojo to Nigerians in general and Christians worldwide.
He exhorted Christians to consider the qualities of love, peace, humility, and sacrifices that were demonstrated by the birth of Jesus Christ, stating that these virtues are crucial for harmony, tolerance, and national unity.
The minister also urged all Nigerians to support government initiatives for national development and unity while using the holiday season to pray for the nation’s peace, security, and future prosperity.
“The Christmas season and the New Year offer Nigerians a chance to deepen their unity, be compassionate to one another, and reaffirm our shared dedication to nation-building,” he stated.
In order to guarantee a calm holiday season, Tunji-Ojo further urged people to cooperate with security services and to continue being law-abiding, security-conscious, and modest in their celebrations.
He wished a prosperous New Year and a happy Christmas to all Nigerians.
