The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office at No. 15 Sokode Crescent, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, had a fire yesterday.
With assistance from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service and other emergency responders, on-duty security guards quickly put out the fire, which started on the building’s fourth story.
FIRS confirmed the event in a statement, stating that while several offices on the impacted floor were damaged, no lives were lost.
Sikiru Akinola, the Executive Chairman of FIRS’s Technical Assistant for Print Media, signed the statement.
“We are happy to say that the incident did not result in any fatalities. Nevertheless, the statement noted that several offices on the impacted floor were damaged.
The agency praised the emergency teams’ quick response, pointing out that their action stopped the fire from spreading to other areas of the structure.
“Our on-duty security personnel responded to the fire promptly, and with the prompt assistance of the FCT Fire Service and other emergency responders, it was successfully contained,” FIRS continued.
The cause of the fire has been investigated, and preliminary results point to a potential electrical issue.
The agency stated that a thorough investigation is still underway and that “preliminary assessments point to a possible electrical fault as the cause of the fire.”
Additionally, FIRS gave the public the assurance that steps are being taken to improve facility safety.
According to the statement, “all internal safety procedures are being carefully examined and reinforced in the interim to prevent similar incidents in the future.”
