Manchester City beat Crystal Palace 3-0 today, moving them within two points of Arsenal, who are in first place in the Premier League. Aston Villa overcame West Ham twice after falling behind.
Nottingham Forest beat Tottenham 3-0, and Sunderland beat Newcastle 1-0 courtesy to an own goal by Nick Woltemade, according to AFP.
Arsenal, who have been the best team in the Premier League this season, just won on Saturday against the last-place Wolves, owing to two own goals.
That put the burden back on City, who have been looking more and more like they are getting their act together in the last few weeks.
Pep Guardiola’s team knew they would have a tough time at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace, who were doing well in the league. In the first half, Oliver Glasner’s team was the more threatening one.
But Palace missed their chances, like when Yeremy Pino struck the crossbar with just goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to beat.
Erling Haaland had mostly been on the sidelines, but just before the interval, he scored his 101st Premier League goal by heading a perfect Matheus Nunes cross over Dean Henderson and into the net.
Palace started the second half well again, but they couldn’t get through, and Phil Foden scored from a distance after getting the ball from Rayan Cherki.
It was the forward’s sixth goal in four Premier League games, and England manager Thomas Tuchel was watching from Selhurst Park.
City seemed sure to get the three points when Haaland blasted a penalty kick past Henderson after the goalkeeper took down Savinho after a strong run down the middle late in the game.
Show Steel Villa
Villa opened their game at the London Stadium as the best team in the league, having won nine of their last ten games.
But they fell behind after only 29 seconds as Mateus Fernandes stole the ball from Ezri Konsa and shot it home.
Just a few minutes later, Konstantinos Mavropanos headed John McGinn’s cross into his own net, making the score even.
In the middle of the second half, Jarrod Bowen put the Hammers back in lead, but Morgan Rogers tied it up again early in the second half.
Rogers gave Villa the lead for the first time in the 79th minute by thumping home a dipping shot from outside the area to make it 3-2.
Emery’s team is now only one point behind City and five points ahead of Chelsea, who is in fourth position.
Tottenham went to Nottingham knowing they needed to win badly because they had only won one of their last six league games.
Callum Hudson-Odoi scored twice, and Ibrahim Sangare scored a great third goal, putting more pressure on manager Thomas Frank, who is having a tough time in his debut season at the club.
Sunderland and Newcastle were playing each other in the Premier League for the first time in almost ten years, after Sunderland had been out of the top flight for years.
Newcastle forward Woltemade scored their goal in the first few minutes of the second half by heading Nordi Mukiele’s cross past his own goalie.
Sunderland moved up to seventh place in the table with the win.
Brentford plays Leeds at home in the late game.
