Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and the Digital Economy, has warned that criminals who work all across the country use high-tech tools to make phone calls and avoid being watched by security cameras.
Tijani talked about it yesterday night on Channels Television.
The minister said that keeping an eye on the communications of criminal groups is much harder than most people think since bandits use clever ways to keep security services from finding them.
He said that the crooks send their calls through several telecoms towers to confound monitoring systems and make it harder for security operatives to find them.
Tijani added, “The President really pushed us to invest in towers in those areas because we found out that they were using a special kind of technology to talk to each other.”
“They’re not using the regular towers; they’re bouncing calls off of several towers.” That’s why they like to live in places that aren’t connected.
Tijani added that the federal government is responding by making the country’s digital and surveillance infrastructure stronger. For example, they are planning to modernize Nigeria’s satellites to improve security monitoring.
“Our satellites will work if our towers don’t,” he remarked.
The minister said that the occurrence shows how badly the country needs to invest a lot of money in its telecommunications infrastructure. He also said that Nigeria’s capability is limited compared to the rest of the world.
“There are more than four million 5G towers in China. He went on to say, “We have about 40,000 towers in Nigeria.”
His words come at a time when instability is rising again in many sections of the country, especially in the north.
In the last few weeks, bandits have kidnapped pupils in Niger and Kebbi states. In Kogi and Kwara states, churches and towns have also been attacked.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a statewide demonstration on December 17 because of the escalating number of kidnappings and murders. They want better security and protection of lives.
