The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) took the international passport of Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, who used to be the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
The Nation says that the seizure was part of the ongoing search for the $490 million in Abacha loot that was found through Mutual Legal Assistance (MLAT).
Malami can’t leave the nation for the next month since he had to check in at EFCC headquarters in Abuja every day to talk with them. This was the condition for his release at 1 a.m. yesterday.
Malami, on the other hand, stated the claims against him were made up and that the truth will come out shortly.
The fact sheet about Malami says that he has a lot of things to clear up with the EFCC in the next month.
“We’ve asked him to tell us where the $490 million worth of Abacha loot that was secured through Mutual Legal Assistance (MLAT) is.”
“We didn’t say he stole money, but he should explain where the money came from.” He will explain this to our investigators as one of the problems.
“We have taken away his international passport because he has to go through a lot of documents and talk to a lot of detectives.”
“One of the terms for his release on bail at 1 a.m. on Saturday was that he had to go to the EFCC headquarters every day to talk to them.
“He can’t leave the nation unless he and the EFCC agree on it or a High Court gives him permission.
“We won’t argue with him about his bragging, but we will make our findings public after a long and thorough investigation.”
Malami said on his X account that the claims against him were false.
He didn’t say anything about the seizure of his international passport, but he did say that the truth would come out shortly.
He remarked, “As part of my promise to keep Nigerians informed about my invitation by the EFCC, I thank Allah for His help.”
“The engagement went well, and I am finally free after an appointment for more engagement as the truth about the false accusations against me continues to come to light.”
