Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the Director-General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), has called on people all over the country to work together to make Online Media stronger in a digital space that is changing quickly. This is happening as the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) celebrates its third anniversary in Abuja.
During his main speech, “Strengthening Corporate Online Media for National Development,” Ochogwu said this.
The Online Editors picked a good theme, according to Chukwuemeka Mbah, the Deputy Director of the Office of the DG. He praised ACOE for its forward-thinking leadership and said that Nigeria’s stability and future prosperity depend on the honesty and behavior of the internet media industry.
“Online media has become a key part of influencing stories, holding people accountable, and moving the country forward. More than half of Nigerians now get their news online. “You are not just reporters; you are also agenda-setters, gatekeepers, and guardians of public trust,” he said.
He said that misleading information is making tensions worse all around the country, especially now that things are getting more dangerous. He used the kidnapping of more than 300 students and teachers in Niger State in November 2025 as an example of how false information may make people more scared.
can hurt people’s trust.
The IPCR DG said that making online media stronger will make governance, transparency, peacebuilding, economic growth, and public involvement better.
He talked about five important duties that corporate web editors have: being accurate, coming up with new digital ideas, putting the national interest first, avoiding sensationalism, and reporting that focuses on unity.
He said again that IPCR is committed to strengthening its engagement with ACOE through research support, training in conflict-sensitive reporting, early-warning collaborations, and cooperative media literacy programs.
