Operatives from the Ondo State Police Command have detained a 35-year-old man named Temigbe Jamiu, who they say pretended to be a serving member of the Nigerian Army.
This information was shared with journalists in Akure, the capital of the state, by Olusola Ayanlade, who is the spokesperson for the Command.
Ayanlade claims that the suspect deceived Mr. Temiloluwa out of ₦1,200,000, as reported by Channels TV.
“These funds are the victim’s mother’s hard-earned retirement benefits that she had invested in properties,” he explained.
Ayanlade elaborated on the arrest by saying that the victim had hired the defendant to help her get her retirement benefits.
But Jamiu and his still-at-large accomplices took advantage of the victim’s confidence, snatched the money, and squandered it on themselves.
According to reports, the suspect admitted to the scam upon his detention and disclosed that he had served at the 82 Divison, Enugu, until being released from the Nigerian Army in 2023.
Ayanlade further by saying that the other conspirators are still being sought after and that legal action is being considered.
At the end of the investigation, the suspect will face charges in court; he is now in lawful custody. According to him, the Command is determined to bring those responsible for criminal actions to justice, and they are currently working to apprehend the remaining accomplices.
The public is urged to stay watchful and report suspicious individuals or activities to the local police formation swiftly. He underlined the Command’s commitment to defending the lives and property of law-abiding citizens of the state.
