The Kebbi State Government has provided clarification regarding the number of abducted schoolgirls currently in captivity, noting that two of the kidnapped students have successfully escaped from their captors.
Halima Bande, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, provided clarification during an interview with Channels Television in Zuru yesterday.
Bande reported that 26 girls were abducted by bandits during the invasion; while two escaped, 24 schoolgirls remain in captivity.
The individuals who escaped were identified as Salma and Hauwa’u Liman, and it has been confirmed that they have returned safely.
“Thus far, only two have managed to escape,” she emphasized.
This event has resulted in widespread trauma among those in proximity. Bande stated, “We lack information regarding their sleeping arrangements, dietary habits, and environmental conditions.”
The commissioner urged the public to refrain from disseminating misleading information regarding the abduction, emphasizing the prevalence of inauthentic information surrounding the incident.
“Consequently, I urge journalists and media outlets to depend solely on verified information concerning the incident,” she stated.
The assailants targeted the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, Kebbi State, abducting more than 20 students.
