Following the UN Security Council’s adoption of Donald Trump’s Gaza peace proposal, Israel has expressed its approval. In response, Hamas has rejected the resolution, which demands the deployment of an international force in Palestinian territory.
According to AFP, yesterday the UN Security Council approved a US-drafted resolution that supports President Trump’s proposal for the Gaza Strip. This plan has helped maintain a shaky ceasefire between Israel and Hamas since October 10.
For the purpose of demilitarising Gaza and securing the border areas, the peace plan specifically permits the establishment of an international force to collaborate with Egypt, Israel, and Palestinian police officers who have recently received training.
Gazan Palestinians welcomed the vote as an opportunity for better living conditions, but they were pessimistic that Israel would really implement the plan.
At this time, we support any international decision that helps the Palestinians. Among the displaced Palestinians residing in a classroom in central Gaza, 39-year-old Saeb Al-Hassanat emphasized the importance of the war’s conclusion.
It makes no difference who governs us. He informed our correspondent that while they are in favor of international management of Gaza, Israel will not comply with any decision and the Security Council resolution will be rendered useless unless there is heavy pressure from the US.
“Peace and prosperity because it insists upon full demilitarization, disarmament and the deradicalization of Gaza,” stated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office in a statement praising Trump’s plan today.
In addition to normalizing relations between Israel and a handful of Arab nations, the plan would “lead to further integration of Israel and its neighbours as well as expansion of Abraham Accords,” according to Netanyahu’s office, which made the announcement on X.
With Russia and China abstaining but not using their veto as permanent members, the text passed with thirteen yes votes and zero negative ones.
‘Under divine control’
The Gaza Strip has been devastated by the two-year war that began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel.
According to Rawia Abbas, a resident of the Zeitun neighborhood of Gaza City who lives in a partially damaged house, the situation in the region is still very bad even though there is a truce.
We are still without shelter, food, and water. People are in a terrible state as winter starts. The 40-year-old mother told our correspondent that her small children wait in line for hours just to acquire a gallon of water and a food ticket.
“Please, put us in God’s hands now.”
According to Trump’s social media statement, “further peace all over the world” will result from the vote.
However, Hamas claimed it was unable to fulfill the “political and humanitarian demands and rights” of the Palestinian people, and the resolution so disqualifies it from any involvement in Gazan governance.
“Our people, its forces, and its constituent organizations reject” the decision that imposes “an international trusteeship on the Gaza Strip,” the Islamist militant group stated in a statement, condemning the creation of an international army.
In order to safeguard civilians and ensure the safety of humanitarian assistance corridors, as well as to work toward the “permanent decommissioning of weapons from non-state armed groups,” the peace plan authorizes the establishment of an International Stabilization Force.
The following day in Gaza
The international community’s decision upheld the “right to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state” and the unfettered flow of aid into Gaza, according to the Palestinian foreign ministry, which is situated in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
“The urgent need to immediately implement this resolution on the ground” was emphasized in a statement on X.
Israel has consistently and unequivocally rejected the idea of a future Palestinian state, while the resolution does make vague reference to the idea in its wording.
The article states that “the conditions may finally be in place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood” once the renewal of Gaza has begun and the Palestinian Authority has implemented the requested reforms.
It also gives the go-ahead to establish a “Board of Peace” to oversee Gaza during its transitional period (and, in theory, Trump could serve as chair) until 2027.
Humanitarian relief delivery on a large scale through the United Nations, the Red Cross, and the Red Crescent are also demanded in the resolution.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog hailed the resolution of the Security Council as a “historic diplomatic achievement… that can and must lead us to the ‘day after’ in Gaza and throughout the region” from Jerusalem.
