In a heated hearing yesterday, the French labor court heard the contentious dispute between Kylian Mbappe and his former team, Paris Saint-Germain. The France captain requested 263 million euros ($304 million), while the club demanded he pay them 440 million euros.
According to AFP, each party presented a lengthy shopping list of complaints with associated costs.
According to PSG, their estimate is partially based on the aftermath of Mbappe’s bungled 300 million-euro deal to Saudi club Al Hilal, which he rejected in June 2023.
When Mbappe’s contract ended the following summer, he went on a free transfer to Real Madrid.
Following the court, our correspondent was informed by Renaud Semerdjian, one of the seven attorneys for the PSG, that “we are indeed claiming 440 million euros.”
According to Semerdjian, the amount included lost transfer fees, damages to the club’s reputation, and what the team said was a breach of an agreement they had with Mbappe after he declined to relocate to Saudi Arabia.
Mbappe, who was not present yesterday but was accompanied by four attorneys, claims he never agreed to forego any money from the club in 2023.
The 26-year-old striker first complained about his treatment by PSG at the beginning of the 2023–24 season in June.
Mbappe claims that after refusing to sign a new deal, the Qatari-owned team benched him and forced him to train with players they were attempting to get rid of.
The players’ union filed a protest about the practice last year because it is so common in France.
Mbappe missed the season’s first match and was not invited to join PSG’s 2023 preseason tour of Asia, but he was later brought up to the squad following discussions with the club.
Additionally, he alleges that the Parisian club is classifying his contract under the incorrect French law.
He left PSG after seven seasons to join Real Madrid, where he reportedly makes 30 million euros a year.
Despite his 308 games and 256 goals, PSG won the Champions League for the first time last season after the striker left.
The panel is anticipated to make a verdict on December 16 after many weeks of deliberation.
