An accusation of sexual misconduct involving a subordinate has led to the suspension of Ezra Olubi, the Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Paystack, a Nigerian payments startup owned by Stripe.
Someone who had dated Olubi in the past posted private grievances online on Wednesday, sparking the online debate.
The unsettling tweets sent by Olubi from 2009 to 2013, which included sexually explicit material involving coworkers and children, came to light again after this article, according to The PUNCH.
The tweets’ rediscovery sparked fresh discussion on responsibility, individual behavior, and the far-reaching effects of social media. Olubi terminated his X account a while ago.
“I judge my female friends by the sound their pee make,” stated one of the unearthed tweets that received considerable condemnation. Although one person said, “Save water,” another credited the sound system in their restroom. Soak in the tub with the daughter of your neighbor.
“Monday will be more fun with a ‘a’ in it,” one of the tweets read on May 23, 2011. Be kind to a coworker right now. Totally useless.
A post on TechCabal stated today that the business had formally investigated the situation.
The claims against Paystack co-founder Ezra Olubi have been brought to our attention. Issues of this kind are given our full attention. In a statement confirmed to TechCabal, the company announced that Ezra has been suspended from all tasks and responsibilities effective immediately, while a formal inquiry is underway.
The company went on to say that it would be keeping mum while the investigation is continuing.
According to Paystack, they will refrain from making any additional comments until the investigation is finished out of respect for the people involved and to safeguard the process’s integrity.
One of the most prominent Nigerian fintech companies, Paystack was established in 2015 by Ezra Olubi and Shola Akinlade. The company offers offline and online payment infrastructure to companies all over Africa.
The business expanded swiftly to support tens of thousands of vendors after becoming the first Nigerian startup to be admitted into the esteemed Y Combinator accelerator in 2016.
One of the biggest exits in Nigerian fintech happened in 2020, when Stripe, a worldwide payments behemoth, paid over US$200 million to purchase Paystack.
Operating as both a co-founder and chief technologist, Olubi was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the company’s technological infrastructure, which allowed it to expand beyond Nigeria.
