The Ghana Police stated they saved a 15-year-old Nigerian girl who was trafficked from Enugu under the pretense of giving her a cleaning job but was instead pushed into prostitution.
The police stated they apprehended one person in connection with the incident, but the main suspect has remained on the run, according to The PUNCH.
Beatrice Turkson, the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Western Central Regional Police, said in a statement yesterday that the rescue happened after the victim’s father reported that his daughter was missing in Nigeria.
The statement said that after the report, police apprehended a woman named Joy Ogbonna, who is said to have kept the victim locked up in a room, forced her to be a prostitute, and taken the money from the crime.
Turkson further said that a medical exam of the woman showed that she was pregnant when she was rescued.
The statement claimed, “On Monday, November 3, 2025, police arrested 25-year-old Joy Ogbonna in Aboso, near Tarkwa, after her father, Ogbonna Onuigbo, reported that his daughter had gone missing in Nigeria in October 2025.” The victim called him on October 24, 2025, and told him that she had been trafficked and abused in Ghana.
“Police investigations showed that one Golden Blessing, who is now on the run, tricked the victim into going from Enugu to Lagos by promising her a cleaning job and then gave her to Joy Ogbonna, who took her to Tarkwa.
“Once he got there, the suspect locked the girl in a room, made her work as a prostitute, and took the money. A kind stranger helped the victim get in touch with her father, which led to her rescue. The victim’s medical report showed that she was five weeks pregnant.
She said that authorities were still trying to catch the offender who was running away and that they were dedicated to stopping human trafficking.
Joy Ogbonna, the suspect, is currently in police custody and will shortly be brought before a judge. They are still trying to catch her accomplice, Golden Blessing, who is thought to be in Nigeria.
The statement ended with, “The Western Central Regional Police Command thanks the public for their support and quick action and reaffirms its commitment to fighting human trafficking and protecting vulnerable people from all forms of exploitation.”
This isn’t the first time that suspected human traffickers in Nigeria have been linked to trafficking across borders.
On August 14, it was reported that the Enugu State Police Command apprehended a 30-year-old man named Raymond Wonna for allegedly being involved in transnational human trafficking and saved two victims.
SP Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesperson, said in a statement that the victims, Miracle Ogar (18) and Angela Kingsley (16), are both from Cross River State.
On August 15, it was also reported that the Lagos State Police Command broke up a well-known child trafficking ring that crossed borders. They rescued eleven victims and arrested four suspects who were said to be involved in recruiting and transporting young Nigerians to Ghana for sex work.
