The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has called for a full, indefinite strike that would start at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2025.
This came after a five-hour emergency National Executive Council meeting last Sunday, where the council decided that the federal government had not met the association’s demands even though they had given them a 30-day deadline last month, according to Sunday PUNCH.
The National Officers Committee had done its job “with grace and confidence,” but the association had no alternative but to go ahead with the strike, according to a statement from NARD President Mohammad Suleiman on Saturday.
Suleiman said, “The NEC has unanimously told us to start a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action on Friday, October 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.”
He said that the council had set out the minimal expectations, how to keep an eye on strikes, and how to make sure that all members around the country followed them.
Suleiman also told all the presidents and general secretaries of the centers to hold emergency congress sessions to tell members about the decisions that had been made.
He said that some people in and out of government had “exploitative plans” against resident doctors and that the union will fight these plans as a group.
He said that members have been told to hand over patients, talk to traditional and religious leaders, and make the public and media aware of why they are going on strike in the days preceding up to it.
“Have faith in your leaders, trust the process, and stay strong.” He said, “Victory is certain.”
The NARD president also said that a press release and press conference with more information on the group’s demands and decisions would be published soon.
He said again that the committee will only act according to what the National Executive Council told them to do.
