An online news site that said the cancellation of events honoring Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was tied to an alleged attempted military coup was called deceptive by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ).
Channels TV says that the report said that the Defense Intelligence Agency arrested 16 military officers, from Captain to Brigadier General, for allegedly being involved in secret meetings to plan a coup against the government.
The DHQ did say, though, that it had detained 16 military officers, which it called “a routine internal process.”
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, signed a statement yesterday in Abuja saying that the claims made by the publication were completely false, malicious, and meant to create unnecessary tension and distrust among the people.
The statement made it clear that the 65th Independence Anniversary parade was canceled so that President Bola Tinubu could go to an important meeting with another country and so that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) could keep up the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
The DHQ also reminded Nigerians that the inquiry of the sixteen officers is only a normal part of keeping discipline and professionalism in the military.
It also said that an investigative panel has been set up and that its results will be made public when it is done.
The DHQ asked all peace-loving people to keep supporting security forces. They said, “The federal government, the legislature, and the judiciary are all working together to keep the country safe, grow, and be happy.” “Democracy is forever.”
The DHQ also told people to ignore the lies that people who spread false information and adversaries of the state are spreading.
The statement went on to say, “The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains firmly loyal to the Constitution and the Federal Government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.”
