Despite Governor Douye Diri’s resignation, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has stated that the party structures in the state are still strong and united.
At an enlarged State Executive Council meeting at the Government House in Yenagoa on Wednesday, Governor Diri—who led the PDP zoning committee that distributed the party’s presidential ticket to the South—announced his departure from the PDP, putting an end to weeks of speculation about his defection.
According to Daily Trust, he stated that the decision was reached after “extensive consultations” with influential state residents.
Today, October 15, 2025, I, Governor Douye Diri, formally announce you that I am resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party, after thorough consultation, he declared.
“I am not the only one quitting. Along with the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, and every other member of my party in the Assembly who shares my position on this, I am present here. For reasons that should be readily apparent, I have officially resigned from the PDP today.
However, the party stated that it had respectfully accepted the governor’s resignation and that its structures were unaffected after an emergency meeting in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa state.
Assuring members of unwavering allegiance and devotion, the PDP reiterated its commitment to the party’s vision, aims, and objectives.
No changes were made to the party structures within the Bayelsa State chapter, according to a statement released by the State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ebiye Agu Ogoli, following the meeting.

In a highly respectful emergency meeting that took place on Wednesday night in Yenagoa, the capital of the state, party leaders verified receipt of the governor’s letter of resignation. Copies of the letter were sent to the State Working Committee (SWC) and addressed to the chairman of Kolokuma/Opokuma Ward 6.
During his time as a PDP member before resigning, Governor Diri established and preserved a positive rapport with stakeholders and party members, and the party leadership was deeply grateful to him for this.
“As the PDP acknowledged the governor’s decision, it assured members of its sustained devotion and allegiance while reiterating its commitment to the party’s vision, goals, and objectives. They stressed that the Bayelsa State chapter’s party structures are strong and united.
With prayers for success in all his future endeavors, the party also sent their best wishes to Governor Diri.
In attendance at the emergency meeting of the State Working Committee were the following: Hon. Solomon Agwana, Chairman; Hon. Ben George Odon, Deputy Chairman; Hon. Gesiye Isowo, Secretary; Elder Luke Demeoru, Treasurer; and Chief Wisdom Nathan, Vice Chairman of the State in the Central Region.
The following individuals were also present: State Organizing Secretary, Hon. Indutimi Opurubelebo; State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ebiye Agu Ogoli; State Woman Leader, Hon. Christie Ebbeli; State Legal Adviser, Barr. Christopher Kainga; State Vice Chairman East, Barr. Obed Newman Andi; State Vice Chairman West, Hon. Tobi Ebikidoumene; Chief Amalala Atua; State Financial Secretary, Hon. Oyisor Didi; State Youth Leader, Hon. Chris Ebbeli; and State Auditor, Elder Akwakwa B. Akwakwa.
