The 27-year-old goalkeeper Luca Zidane, who is the son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane, has been called up to play in Algeria’s last two World Cup qualifying matches for 2026.
Zidane changed his international allegiance from France to Algeria last month, having playing for Les Bleus at the juvenile level. According to AFP, he now plays for Granada in Spain’s second level.
He might still play for Algeria, the country of his paternal grandparents, because he never made the jump to the French national team.
With 19 points, Algeria is in first place in their World Cup qualification group. If they beat Somalia next week, they will qualify for the tournament. They could also qualify if they beat Uganda, who is in second position, in their last game.
The North Africans have made it to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which will begin on December 21 in Morocco.
Zidane started at Real Madrid’s youth system in 2004 and worked his way up to the reserve team.
He played for the main team for the first time in their last league game of the 2017–18 season. When Real won their 13th European title in 2018, he was the third-choice goalkeeper.
Zinedine Zidane was born in Marseille, although his family came from a little village in Bejaia, which is around 250 kilometers east of Algiers.
