Taoreed, a recent graduate of the Osun State College of Technology in Esa-Oke, was killed by a stray bullet during a fight between competing cult groups in the area.
The PUNCH said that the event happened on Tuesday, September 23, not long after he got his National Youth Service Corps call-up letter from the school.
On Monday, September 22, gunfire broke out on the school grounds while some final-year students were having their signing-out parties. This was the first time that chaos broke out.
A student at the institution, who talked to our reporter yesterday but didn’t want to be named, stated that suspected cultists killed a final-year student in the process.
He claimed, “We were signing out after our tests in the afternoon when we heard gunfire outside the school.” Everyone bolted for safety. We found out later that cultists had killed a student in their last year of school. “It was a bad situation.”
Our reporter saw a video yesterday that showed youngsters running for safety at the school entrance.
The student remembered that something like this happened early last year. They also said that gunshots could be heard near the school during one of their sign-out parties.
A police source, on the other hand, said that Taoreed died the next day during a revenge attack on the Ilesa–Esa-Oke Road.
The source said that Taoreed had gone to the school on Tuesday to pick up his NYSC call-up letter. He was standing at the side of the road for a bus home when gunmen suddenly opened fire.
“After the death of the final-year student on Monday, what happened was a revenge attack. The cultists were after their enemies in the area where Taoreed was trying to get on a bus. They opened fire, and one of the rounds wounded him. He raced for shelter when he heard the gunshots, not knowing he had been shot. He was later found in a shrub nearby, where he had crawled to but was not responding.
It was also learned that the letter telling him to report for duty was located in the black cross bag he had with him at the time of the incident.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the occurrence when we called.
He called the event a “cult clash” and said that two individuals died.
“It was a fight between cults. There were two deaths among the students. One died right away, while the other died in the hospital. He said, “We are still working to catch the people who did it.”
Over the years, fights between confraternities have killed a lot of students, especially in areas where colleges and universities are located. People typically kill each other because they want to be the best, want revenge, or try to get college students to join their groups.
In June, it was reported that a man who had not yet been named was thought to be dead after a violent fight between people thought to be members of competing cult organizations at Osun State Polytechnic in Iree.
Several trustworthy students at the polytechnic, who asked to remain anonymous, reported that the fight involved members of the Eiye and Aye confraternities.
They also reported that four other people were hurt in the fight that broke out right outside the school’s front gate.
