Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), exhorted governments yesterday to follow through on promises made at COP29 in Baku.
Stiell made the request during the second Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW), which took place in Azerbaijan from September 29 to October 3, 2025.
The forum drew in high-level UN officials.
The goal of Climate Action Week is to make the global climate agenda more relevant to local communities and speed it up through practical, place-based action. It also aims to highlight regional innovation and leadership on the green transition, including financial institutions, and to encourage cooperation between the public and private sectors, local and subnational actors, academia, professions, youth, and civil society.
Other goals include creating a platform that brings together people from different sectors to help make transitions that support growth, prosperity, and climate resilience.
He said that two things were necessary for success: making project portfolios that show both national priorities and commercial interests, and forming partnerships that bring together public and private money with new ideas and technology.
