Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), said that President Bola Tinubu chose to lift the six-month emergency rule in Rivers state for the good of the state as a whole.
President Tinubu proclaimed a state of emergency in Rivers State at the pinnacle of the conflict between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and adherents of his estranged political godfather, Wike, the immediate previous governor of the state, writes Daily Trust.
For six months, Tinubu had put Fubara, Ngozi Odu, the deputy governor, and members of the Rivers House of Assembly on hold.
He named Vice-Admiral Ibot Ekwe Ibas, the previous Chief of Naval Staff, as the State’s Sole Administrator, which drew a lot of criticism.
The President said on Wednesday that the emergency rule would end since the state has sent signals that it didn’t need to last any longer.
Wike said on Channels Television last night that the government might have done things to keep the emergency rule going longer.
“I was watching TV today and saw that there are people who are natural crisis builders who think they can only benefit when there is a crisis,” he remarked.
“We would have done one or two things to keep the state of emergency going if we didn’t want it to end.” But we did it for the good of the state.
