Buba Galadima, a leader in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has said that Nigeria could fall into civil war if the federal government goes through with its intention to make a retired Court of Appeal judge who is already controversial the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Galadima said in an interview with ARISE News yesterday that the government was thinking of putting a recently retired judge with what he called “a record of notoriety” in charge of the electoral board.
People are saying all over the place that this government is going to name a recently retired Court of Appeal judge who is known for being bad to be the chairman of INEC in November. I hope it’s not true. He remarked, “If that man becomes the chairman of INEC, you can be sure that this government is asking for a civil war in this country.”
The NNPP leader said that the current government doesn’t care about the rule of law. “So you can see that this government has no respect for the rule of law,” he said. We can’t live in a country where the government doesn’t follow the law.
He also criticized the current INEC leadership, saying that it has already been biased in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said, “The INEC chairman has already rigged the election for the APC.” They sent someone who is the secretary of the party that went to court for the APC to be the interim national chairman. He was then given the job of chairman of INEC.
Galadima said that these kinds of actions put Nigeria’s election system at risk and warned that terrible things would happen if the purported plan comes true.
“If this guy is made chairman of INEC, there won’t be any elections in Nigeria.” He said, “There will be no elections in this country, and it will cause chaos.”
Calling for vigilance among Nigerians, he declared: “We cannot allow somebody that has a record of notoriety to be imposed on us as INEC chairman.”
