Akon, a famous musician from around the world, is going through a big shift in his life because his wife, Tomeka Thiam, has filed for divorce after almost 30 years of marriage.
People reported on Saturday that Thiam is trying to end the marriage since they can’t agree on anything. Court papers filed in Fulton County, Georgia, on September 11, 2025, show this.
The couple, who have a daughter together, are getting close to what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary next month.
Thiam filed for joint legal custody of their kid in her petition, but she also asked for primary physical custody, with Akon allowed to visit.
She is also asking the court to refuse the singer’s plea for spousal support for herself.
Akon, who is 51 years old, is still publicly defending his views on polygamy, which he has always linked to his cultural upbringing.
He said on The Zeze Mills Show in 2022 that polygamy is natural in his culture and that “part of our culture is polygamy.” Of course. It looks normal to me because it’s part of our culture. When we went to the West, we didn’t leave our African culture behind. The mistake the West made was making all these regulations without thinking about nature.
Akon, who has said he has nine kids, has talked a lot about how hard it is to balance his home life with his busy job. He said that he makes sure his family is financially stable and supported, but he doesn’t go to many events.
In the same interview from 2022, he said, “My job isn’t to do all that extra stuff and these holidays and recitals.”
“I’m taking care of my duty to make sure the family has food and a roof over their heads. If I have time to do that and show love, then yes, I will.”
He said that technology has helped him stay in touch:
“Being there for my kids means being there for them financially.” If I’m around, I’m there. But you can’t be everywhere and at all times. And with technology, I can be there every day, like through FaceTime and other ways.
Since the filing, neither Akon nor Thiam has said anything official.
