It was a moment of celebration filled with joy and questions for a family in Nyamasimbi village, Nyaribari Masaba, Kisii county, after their ‘dead’ daughter returned.
Sarah Kwamboka resurfaced seven months after her parents believed they had buried her, leaving them wondering whose body lay in the grave.
The woman had gone missing in November 2024, prompting her family to launch a frantic search for her.
How did Kisii family bury wrong person?
A few months later, they received reports that she had been involved in an accident and died on the spot.
Her mother, Teresa Gesare, explained that she had sent Kwamboka to her grandmother’s place in Sansora, but she never returned.
“Sarah did not reach Sansora, so we began searching for her as a missing person, hoping that she could return home. Later, in February, we received reports that she had been involved in an accident, and her body was in the mortuary,” said her mother.
Teresa explained that she was told her daughter had been hit by a vehicle in Metamaywa, and her body was in Keroka.
“When looking at the body, I assumed it was my daughter because it had been in the mortuary for almost two months. It matched the timelines when Sarah disappeared,” she added.
Teresa informed her family members, and preparations for the funeral began.
Where was Sarah Kwamboka?
Months later, as they tried to move on from the pain of losing a child, Sarah called home to say she was alive.
The woman, thought to have died, revealed that she had been living in Nyamira County for the past few months while her family thought she had passed away.
Her aunt, Pacifica Kemunto, said that, despite the news being terrifying, they were happy she was alive.
They also called on the relevant authorities to help them exhume the body they had buried before Sarah could return to her parents’ home.
“Sarah will come and be close to home while the government exhumes the body. She will then join the family once the government has taken the body away,” stated Kemunto.
