The Federal Ministry of Works has said that they will quickly fix the broken deck on the Shagamu-Benin highway that goes to Benin. They want to reassure road users that the problem will be fixed quickly and for good.
On Tuesday, Uchenna Orji, the Minister of Works’ Special Adviser (Media), signed a statement saying that the ministry is actively following up on repairs and has sent a team of engineers to the site. The announcement claimed, “The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has ordered a team of engineers to go to the site of the damaged bridge right away.” This bridge is on the Shagamu-Benin road between Edo and Ondo States.
The ministry said that the bridge in question, which has two lanes of traffic, has a noticeable hole on the Benin-bound side in one of its five arches.
“In keeping with the proactive approach to interventions by the Renewed Hope administration of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu GCFR, urgent action has been taken on the damaged part of the bridge. It will take a maximum of 45 days after the concrete work is done for vehicles to be able to use that part of the road again so that the concrete can set.” The statement went on to say, “It would be remembered that a similar incident happened on one of the spans in the past and was fixed quickly.”
The government said the damage was due to the bridge’s age, as it was built in 1981.
“The damage shown on the bridge is due to it being older. Old age can weaken the structures of bridges. The Shagamu-Benin bridge was erected in 1981, and the deck of the bridge is getting old. There are a lot of things that can affect how long a bridge lasts, such as the materials used, the weather, the amount of traffic, and how well it is kept up. This overtime leads to problems like fractures, holes, rust, or weak structures.
Umahi told us that a permanent solution is in the works and that it will involve rebuilding the entire deck using cutting-edge engineering methods.

The Minister of Works says that a permanent fix is on the way for the Shagamu-Benin bridge. This will involve taking off the whole deck slab of the two sets of bridges in Ondo and Edo States, which are all in the same place, and rebuilding the deck slab using new engineering technology.
“He says he’s sorry for the trouble that road users have had or will have during the time that the work is being done. He said that the Federal Ministry of Works will cooperate with the Federal Road Safety staff to keep traffic moving on one side of the bridge during the repairs so that drivers don’t get stranded in traffic. He says that Mr. President is getting involved in fixing more than 30 bridges across the country in 2025 alone, and that this work needs to be done quickly.
He also thanked the person who raised the alert about the bridge deterioration and asked the people to appreciate the government’s work to improve Nigeria’s roads.
“The Minister of Works acknowledges the person who made the video that brought attention to the broken part of the bridge. He talks about the content creator’s preconceived ideas about the Renewed Hope administration’s small efforts to improve the road system and expand the transportation ecosystem to encourage progressive national economic growth. He tells the content creator and others who think this way that the Renewed Hope agenda to revolutionize road infrastructure nationwide is on track and that the mission to revitalize and strengthen the inherited deteriorating federal road architecture is making great progress across the board.
Umahi also repeated President Tinubu’s promise to change Nigeria’s transportation system, saying that the Renewed Hope initiatives would help the economy grow.
“The minister says again that Mr. President is fully committed to changing Nigeria’s transportation system and setting it up for long-term economic growth. His plan to build the Renewed Hope legacy projects on top of the inherited ongoing road projects is a brave and ambitious way to expand the country’s road network. This will help with overall development in areas like healthcare, education, tourism, regional integration, industrialization, and other economic activities that will raise the country’s human development index.
