Nicholas Giroux, 37, was sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years for killing Nigerian-American boxer Isaiah Olugbemi in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
PUNCH Online reported on Saturday that Giroux was sentenced on Friday afternoon by Judge Richard Trunnell of the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court after he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and using a gun in a violent crime. This information came from a press release from the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office. In the Division of Corrections, the terms will run one after the other.
Giroux shot Olugbemi, 27, who was a rising star in amateur boxing and a parent, numerous times on June 17, 2024, in the 500 block of Meadowmist Way, Odenton.
Police said the guy had been shot multiple times and eventually died at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. The autopsy said that the death was a homicide by shooting.
Video from the scene showed Giroux walking up to Olugbemi, shooting him several times until he fell, and then firing three more shots before running away. Police found 9mm cartridge cases at the spot.
Investigators said Giroux had accosted the victim and a neighbor approximately two weeks before the picnic, brandishing a gun but not pointing it at them.
He confessed to the murder during questioning and showed police where the gun used in the crime was.
State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess called the murder “cruel and senseless,” pointing out that Olugbemi had a bright future in boxing.
“Mr. Olugbemi was a father and a rising star in amateur boxing,” she said. It’s absolutely shocking how cold-hearted and unrepentant this Defendant is. This sentence is fair for him. And for Mr. Olugbemi’s family and friends, I hope that today brings them some feeling of justice for what they went through.
It greatly bothers me that this Defendant is so callous and doesn’t feel sorry for what they did. This sentence is fair for him. I hope that today brings some feeling of justice to Mr. Olugbemi’s family and friends.
The investigation was led by homicide detectives from the Anne Arundel County Police Department, and the case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Carolynn Grammas.
