The Kano Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has taken in 12 women who were rescued from human trafficking. They are all between the ages of 15 and 50.
Reports from NAN said that Mr. Abdullahi Babale, the Zonal Commander of NAPTIP, confirmed the news today in Kano while receiving the victims from the Kano State Hisbah Board, which worked with the agency to rescue them.
Babale said that the victims were stopped on August 31 at Karota Luxurious Park, Hotoro Western Bye-Pass, when they were on their way to Ghana and then to Saudi Arabia for suspected labor exploitation.
He said that the victims, who were from the states of Kano, Katsina, Borno, Jigawa, and Zamfara, were being trafficked while pretending to look for better work prospects abroad.
Police detained a 45-year-old man named Mohammed Saleh in connection with the case.
Babale claimed that they were still trying to catch other important individuals who were part of the trafficking network.
Babale said, “The rescue and arrest are in line with the directive of the NAPTIP Director-General, Hajiya Binta Adamu-Bello, to gather more information and go after suspected traffickers in Nigeria.”
He praised Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, the Commander-General of the Kano Hisbah Board, and the Kano State Government for working together to prevent human trafficking and keep weak people safe.
Babale said that the victims would get counseling and therapy before being reunited with their families, which is in keeping with NAPTIP’s victim-centered approach.
He also told parents to be more careful about keeping their kids safe from traffickers who take advantage of people who are having trouble making ends meet and promise them better lives abroad.
He also said, “We ask people to report any strange movements or activities that might be related to human trafficking in their communities.”
