More than a decade on, updates on Michael Schumacher’s health are still rare. Since his devastating skiing accident in 2013, his family has guarded his privacy with determination. Recent accounts suggest that his wife, Corinna (née Betsch), has faced a series of tough decisions to maintain his care.
Since then, little to nothing has been known about Schumacher’s health condition. He continues his uphill battle in hopes of a full recovery.
The Sun has reported that Corinna has been forced into selling various family assets to cover her husband’s medical care, which costs up to €7 million (£5.6m/$7.5m) per year.
According to the same newspaper, one of the first assets to be sold was the family vacation home in Norway, which sold for €2.9 million (£2.4m/$3.1m) in 2015.
In 2015, the family went on to sell other properties alongside their private jet, which earned them around €35 million (£29m/$38m), according to ABC.
In fact, the sale of properties has become an important source of revenue for the family of Schumacher, who was moved from the Lausanne hospital centre to his mansion in the Swiss city of Gland, where Corinna created an authentic ‘private hospital’ just for him.
In 2024, Corinna organised an auction of eight of Michael Schumacher’s watches in Switzerland. The jewellery earned his family another €4 million (£3.4m/$4.3m), which will also be used for his treatments.
In May 2025, it was reported that the family was also set to receive an additional 200,000 euros (£ 170,000/$217,000) after winning a lawsuit against the editors of the German magazine Die Aktuelle, part of the Funke media group, for publishing an interview with Schumacher generated using artificial intelligence.
Now, this July, it was reported that a one‑of‑a‑kind racing motorbike once ridden by Schumacher is also heading to auction, with estimates suggesting it could fetch as much as £30,000. The 2010 Honda CBR1000RR SC59 was customised by Holzhauer Racing Performance (HRP) and adapted from a standard road bike into a full race‑ready model for Schumacher’s private track sessions, according to Luxury Auto News.
This entire situation stems from the accident that Schumacher suffered on December 29, 2013, while skiing in the Méribel resort, in the French Alps. There, on the verge of retirement, he was enjoying his Christmas holidays when tragedy struck..
