Goodbye to John Mensah, Founder of Uncle John’s Bakery in London
It is with deep sadness that the Ghanaian community UK mourns the passing of John Mensah, the visionary founder and former CEO of Uncle John’s Bakery in Tottenham. Uncle John’s Bakery, a cherished institution within the Ghanaian and wider Afro-Caribbean community, has been a staple in London for decades, embodying the heart and soul of authentic Ghanaian cuisine and culture. His death occurred on Monday 11 November 2024
John Mensah started Uncle John’s Bakery in the early 1980s with a simple mission: to bring a taste of home to Ghanaians living abroad. What began as a small operation with a few products soon blossomed into a thriving bakery known for its freshly baked Ghanaian bread, pastries, and treats that became beloved not only among Ghanaians but also across diverse communities. Uncle John’s Bakery, with its signature sweet bread, brought people together, fostering a sense of nostalgia, community, and pride for Afro-Caribbean heritage in the UK.
Under Mr. Mensah’s leadership, the bakery expanded and flourished, becoming a go-to for anyone craving a slice of Ghanaian culture. As the bakery grew, so did its impact. From local supermarkets to major retailers, Uncle John’s products made their way into countless households, sustaining cultural traditions and introducing new generations to the unique flavors of Ghana.
Sadly, Mr. Mensah’s family was struck by tragedy during the COVID-19 pandemic, as his son passed away due to complications related to the virus. The loss was a deep blow to the family and the business, yet John’s resilience and commitment to his community kept him going. With strength and fortitude, he continued to support the bakery, preserving his son’s legacy and their shared dream of a thriving family business.
Mr. Mensah’s passing marks the end of an era, yet his legacy lives on through the bakery and in the hearts of those who knew him. His contributions have not only enriched the Ghanaian community in the UK but have also strengthened cross-cultural ties, making Uncle John’s Bakery a symbol of unity and pride.
As we bid farewell to John Mensah, we honour his life’s work and remember a man who made a lasting difference. The community extends its deepest condolences to the Mensah family, who have given so much to keep Ghanaian culture alive and vibrant in the UK.
The family appreciates the support of the community during this difficult time.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
Rest in peace, John Mensah.
