Uncle John’s Bakery, a cherished institution within the Ghanaian and wider Afro-Caribbean community, has been a staple in London for decades, embodying the heart and soul of authentic Ghanaian cuisine and culture. His death occurred on Monday 11 November 2024

John Mensah started Uncle John’s Bakery in the early 1980s with a simple mission: to bring a taste of home to Ghanaians living abroad. What began as a small operation with a few products soon blossomed into a thriving bakery known for its freshly baked Ghanaian bread, pastries, and treats that became beloved not only among Ghanaians but also across diverse communities. Uncle John’s Bakery, with its signature sweet bread, brought people together, fostering a sense of nostalgia, community, and pride for Afro-Caribbean heritage in the UK.

Under Mr. Mensah’s leadership, the bakery expanded and flourished, becoming a go-to for anyone craving a slice of Ghanaian culture. As the bakery grew, so did its impact. Sadly, Mr. Mensah’s family was struck by tragedy during the COVID-19 pandemic, as his son passed away due to complications related to the virus. With strength and fortitude, he continued to support the bakery, preserving his son’s legacy and their shared dream of a thriving family business.
