King Sunny Ade vows : I‘ll always perform ‘Wait for Me’ song on behalf of Onyeka Onwenu
Juju music legend King Sunny Ade, has vowed to keep the memory of Onyeka Onwenu alive as long as he lives by performing their duet, “Waiting for Me” which was released in 1989.
KSA made the vow, while he joined other music practitioners to pay a condolence visit to the family of the late queen of songs at Ikoyi, Lagos residence during the week, reports Saturday Vanguard.
Consoling the family, the Juju legend, who appeared emotional, said Onwenu was not an ordinary woman, but someone who would sit down with you and say ‘can I chip in some advice?’ and her advice was always very right.
He said, “I will on her behalf perform ‘Waiting for Me’ throughout my life. I have done it several times in different countries, where I gave credit to her.”
On working with the late songstress, KSA said, “When it comes to music that two people have to do together, she used to do more than I did. She would just tap me and say, ‘Sunny, don’t worry, let’s take it this way, and it’s always good.”
He debunked the rumour that made the rounds decades ago that he dated Onwenu, saying, “It was a gimmick we allowed because of the duets we did together. Before we launched the duet I did with her, “Waiting for Me”, people used to think that she was my girl friend. But both of us never said yes or no. On the day of the unveiling of the song, they were disappointed because of what they saw.”
