Over the weekend, in the Palmgroove neighbourhood of Lagos, a 35-year-old woman named Rofiat and her two sons were allegedly run over by a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver identified as Sunday Bukola.

After the incident, the driver apparently turned to his heel out of fear of being lynched by an enraged mob that had gathered nearby, according to Daily Trust.

It was discovered that although Rofiat and her son Basit, who was five years old, lived, Malik, her five-year-old son, passed away immediately.

At present, Rofiat and Basit are receiving care at an undisclosed Lagos hospital’s intensive care unit.

According to Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin, who verified the incident, the victims were struck by an unregistered BRT bus.

Hundeyin said preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were crossing the BRT lane at Palmgroove inward Onipanu when the incident occurred.

He said, “35-year-old Rofiat and her two sons, Malik, 5, and Basit, 2, were crossing the BRT lane. Unfortunately, Malik died on the spot, but Rofiat and Basit were rushed to the hospital.

“The corpse of Malik has been deposited at the mortuary. The driver was later arrested and he is now in police custody.”
