In a statement issued yesterday, Mr. Godwin Abumisi, national president of the Nigeria Union of seniors (NUP), expressed his deepest regrets over the fuel subsidy’s elimination and the suffering it has caused Nigerian seniors.

The statement was made by Abumisi during the beginning of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Akure, according to Vanguard.

To ease the financial blow of the petrol subsidy cut, the federal government promised retirees a N25,000 cash award; he pleaded with them not to break their word.

This year, the Pensioners’ Day was observed on October 5, 2023, in accordance with the day being declared as the Older Persons’ Day by the Federal Government,” the NUP boss noted in his remarks.

At a global press conference, we requested that pensioners be included in the N25,000 cash reward that the federal government had announced.

We hope that the list that was presented would be processed with the necessary zeal after our meeting with Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs.

Everyday Nigerians, especially seniors, have suffered because of the subsidy elimination; there’s no sugarcoating it.

“Given this, we would like to take this opportunity to fervently urge the federal, state, and local governments to take immediate action to alleviate the suffering of our fellow citizens and other susceptible Nigerians.”

In addition, Johnson Osunyemi, the Ondo State union chairman, spoke and vowed to uphold the organisation’s principles and constitution at all times, while also pledging support to the national body.
