Two police officers were killed and two others were injured when suspected Boko Haram rebels ambushed the convoy of Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni along the Maiduguri-Dramaturg Road.

Yesterday, the governor was attacked after attending the 24th convocation at the University of Maiduguri in Borno State.

An anonymous witness claims that gunmen on both sides of the highway opened fire on the convoy, with the aim of killing the pilot.

Today, we barely avoided certain doom. Those travelling to Damaturu from the 24th convocation at the University of Maiduguri were ambushed between the towns of Beneshiekh and Mainok, a distance of less than 60 miles.

From both sides of the road, rebels opened fire on the police convoy, killing one officer instantly and the other from excessive blood loss. He explained that they had left Maiduguri at a late hour (about 6:00 p.m.).

While returning to Damaturu, the state capital, this incident occurred without Governor Buni in the convoy. According to reports, he attended a formal event in Abuja.

This is the first time the convoy of the Yobe State governor has been targeted since the onset of the Boko Haram insurgency 12 years ago.
