Tunji Disu has been named the new Commissioner of Police in Rivers State by IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

Nwonyi Emeka was transferred from Rivers State to the Force Headquarters in Abuja after he was redeployed by the IGP.

The redeployments were revealed in a statement by Force spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, this morning.

The IGP also reshuffled the assignments of 24 commissioners and 14 assistant inspectors general.

After a political crisis last week shook the oil-rich South-South state, Emeka was redeployed from the Rivers State Police Command and Disu was posted to the Command.

Following last week’s impeachment scandal against Governor Sim Fubara, who claimed that police fired at him while he was inspecting a burned area of the Rivers State House of Assembly, some protesting youths had sought the redeployment of Emeka.

Despite police denials, calls for the IGP to reorganise the Command have become louder.

Before his new appointment, Disu was Head of the IGP Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and a former Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos State.

Similarly, CP Mohammed Barde was transferred by the IGP from the Imo State Police Command to the Safer Highways unit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. Aboki, CP, took over for Barde. The election for governor of Imo State is scheduled on November 11, 2023.

The IGP emphasised the need of professionalism and diligence in the application of the use of force policy to the newly assigned officers.
