The FG and Organised Labour will review progress on enforcing agreements during a meeting today.
On Monday, October 30, the federal government and organised labour will meet to review the status of the 15-point Memorandum of Understanding that was signed on October 3 and led to the suspension of the indefinite strike planned for October 3 by organised labour, according to the NLC President.
According to Nigerian Tribune, Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, called for the meeting.
At a press conference held in Abuja yesterday, Joe Ajaero said that the meeting’s purpose is to evaluate the government’s performance over the past 30 days.
After the government signed a 15-point MoU with Labour on Oct. 2, the union called off its planned strike for Oct. 3.
The head of the NLC has stated that the labour movement will boycott any gathering that includes Minister of Labour and Employment Simon Lalong.
The minister has been charged by the NLC of conspiring against the accord agreed with the federal government last week.
The issue that had been roiling the National Union of Road Transport Workers was part of the arrangement with the government.
The NLC said the minister was on the side of a rival NURTW section in the leadership.
The ministry and NLC are now at icy odds about this.
According to what Ajaero told the press, “all things being equal on their report and template whether all those issues have been met in the last 30 days if that meeting holds without the minister of Labour because he will not be present in any meetings with us.”
If the federal government tries to schedule a meeting with the minister of labour and jobs today, it won’t happen.
The minister of labour is no longer in charge, hence he is not calling meetings, as you may have seen. Therefore, it would be a waste of time to rely on him to find answers to problems related to Labour.
The invitation to tomorrow’s meeting came from the chief of staff of the president’s office, which is also the traditional venue for such gatherings.
“The current minister of labour we have has no business meddling in the labour disputes that Nigeria is currently experiencing.
In regards to cng, they have officially released it. Perhaps they are working to keep their end of the bargain with us.
“We expect to hear from them tomorrow and assess the situation then.”
