Anambra state officials said they arrested 45-year-old Oluchukwu Nwosu on charges that she sold her 3-month-old grandchild to a stranger for N50,000.

This was announced at a press conference held yesterday in Awka by the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, according to NAN.

Obinabo reported that the infant had been saved after nearly a month of constant intelligence reporting and surveillance.

“The rescue effort was initiated after Ijeoma Nwosu reported that her mother, Oluchukwu, had sold her newborn son against her will and was refusing to disclose his whereabouts.

The ministry acted swiftly after receiving the complaint to locate and arrest those responsible.

After questioning and further investigation, the police will be given custody of four suspects in connection with the incident.

It breaks my heart to see the infant looking so weak and malnourished.

“The purchaser claims she cannot afford nutritious baby food and instead feeds her child soya bean powder,” she explained.

The commissioner was disappointed that unlawful adoption was still occurring despite state and federal attempts to stop it.

Those responsible for illegal adoption, she said, would be held accountable in court.

Oluchukwu, in an interview with reporters, apologised and explained that her daughter Ijeoma had three children out of wedlock before she sold one of them.

We have no money. We can’t afford to feed ourselves or take care of the kids.

“So, when I met one Tochukwu Asiegbu, we bargained and agreed that he will pay N50,000 and he paid me the money,” she explained.

Asiegbu added that he made N30,000 in commission by merely introducing Oluchukwu to the customer.

Buyer Evelyn Egwuatu of Uruagu, Nnewi, claims to have paid N200,000 to vendor Ebelechukwu Uba of Ebonyi, Anambra State.

Uba countered that he was merely acting as a go-between, and that the actual decision to sell the baby to Egwuatu had been made by Asiegbu and Oluchukwu.
