Emeka Anyaoku has called for a new constitution to combat corruption and insecurity.
Former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Emeka Anyaoku is concerned about the state of the Nigerian country and has urged for a new constitution.
Channels TV says that he made the plea yesterday in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, while giving the 2023 Convocation Lecture of Afe Babalola University.
Anyaoku, speaking on the topic “Management of diversity: A major challenge to governance in pluralistic countries,” noted that in the early years of independence, Nigeria effectively managed variety.
According to the wise man, a new constitution is Nigeria’s best hope for reversing the country’s current downward spiral.
“It is indisputable that the early years of our country’s independence saw better management of Nigeria’s diversity. “During that time, everyone in Nigeria saw the country’s diversity as a source of strength and an inspiration for national unity,” he said.
Instead of continuing to make changes to the Constitution from 1999, I urge the presidency, in conjunction with the National Assembly, to recognise the pressing need for a new Constitution to be crafted by the people of Nigeria. In order to achieve this goal, I urge the Federal Government to promptly implement the following measures.
To begin, it was proposed that “a National Constituent Assembly comprised of representatives directly elected on a non-party basis” meet to design a new constitution for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He maintained that the country’s economic growth and security were both faster before the military involvement, and that this was because of the healthy rivalry that existed between the different areas.
According to Afe Babalola, founder of the ABUAD, the provisions of the 1999 Constitution have made politicians regard politics as a business enterprise, which is why a new constitution is urgently needed to transform the country.
He said that for thirty years he has been trying to get the Nigerian government and parliament to write a new constitution because diversity in a country as diverse as Nigeria can be impossible to manage without one.
