Breaking News : Lagos is heating up as the third anniversary of the EndSars protest in Nigeria by the Youths
On this day in 2020, Nigerians commemorated the third anniversary of the gunshots that occurred during the #EndSARS demonstration at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos, led by Nigerian skitmaker Adebowale Adedeyo, better known by his stage name, Mr Macaroni.
Meanwhile, there were many law enforcement officials stationed at the Lekki tollbooth.
According to Vanguard, Idowu Owohunwa, the commissioner of police for the state of Lagos, was present together with other high-ranking law enforcement officials.
Yesterday, news emerged that the Lagos State Police Command had issued a warning against gatherings at the Lekki tollgate.
Background:
Protests using the hashtag “#EndSARS” called for an end to police brutality, extrajudicial killings, extortion, and abuse of authority, particularly on the part of former members of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The protest, which had a relatively quiet start, eventually resulted to the federal government of Nigeria disbanding SARS.
However, the demonstration quickly escalated into violence as criminals used the opportunity to attack police and civilians and torch public buildings and stations.
Officers from the Nigerian Army opened fire on the crowd on October 20th, killing and injuring some of the primarily young demonstrators.
