The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has a new Executive Chairman after President Bola Tinubu on Thursday appointed Mr. Ola Olukoyede to a four-year term in the position, with the possibility of extension pending confirmation by the Senate.

It’s been nearly four months since he fired Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, who was leading the agency fighting corruption at the time.

“Mr. Olukayode’s appointment follows the resignation of the suspended Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa,” read a statement signed by President Buhari’s Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, on Thursday.

“President Tinubu appoints new EFCC. Chairman and Secretary of the Commission” is the title of the official announcement.

Attorney Olukoyede has worked in the fields of regulatory compliance consulting, fraud management, and corporate intelligence for over 22 years.

Having served as Chief of Staff to the Executive Chairman (2016-2018) and Secretary to the Commission (2018-2023), he is very familiar with the inner workings of the EFCC. Thus, he qualifies under the law to serve as Chairman of the EFCC.

Mr. Muhammad Hammajoda has been appointed by President Tinubu to serve as the Secretary of the EFCC for a renewable term of five years beginning immediately, pending confirmation by the Senate.

Hammajoda is a highly qualified public administrator with a background in public finance management, having earned both a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Maiduguri.

His professional life started off with him lecturing at Mubi’s Federal Polytechnic. After that, he entered the banking industry and went on to have long and fruitful careers at the now-defunct Allied Bank and the Standard Trust Company.

The President has charged the newly appointed members of the Commission with the responsibility of restoring public trust in government, as the fight against corruption through a revamped anti-corruption infrastructure remains a cornerstone of his Renewed Hope agenda.
